If you’re a car owner, you rely on the vehicle for transportation to work or school. When it’s not operating properly, it can be a huge inconvenience. There are several telltale signs that it may be time to take your car or truck in for auto repairs. The key is to catch them early. Here are several red flags to keep an eye out for.

4 Auto Repair Alerts

1. Unusual Noises

When a car or truck is in good condition, it will typically run noise-free. Strange sounds could indicate an underlying mechanical problem. Listen for knocking noises under the hood. The engine bearings may be on their last legs. Grinding sounds when breaking could point to worn brake pads. Meanwhile, a sustained whining sound might mean the transmission needs servicing.

2. Heavy Exhaust Smoke

The combustion chamber might contain unwanted oil. White smoke, on the other hand, is typically caused by coolant leaks.

3. Strange Odors

Your nose is an excellent way to determine if auto repairs are needed. For instance, a damaged or worn clutch may produce an odor that smells like burnt paper. After turning on your car’s air conditioning and heating system, take note if you notice a sweaty sock odor. The air vents might be contaminated with mold. Additionally, antifreeze leaks may produce a sweet, honey-like smell.

4. Engine Vibrations

If your vehicle is shaking, sputtering, or accelerating, there could be problems with the transmission or fuel injection system. Cars that pull to the left or right while driving might have poor tire alignment. If you notice any strange vibrations while in park or idling, ask your auto repair technician do a diagnostic.
