Area rugs add texture and warmth to a living room and can bring together your decor for a cohesive interior design. However, which placement will work best depends on the rug and the room. Here are a few tips to get you started on enhancing your living space with rugs.

How to Set a Living Room Area Rug

1. Exposed Floor vs. Covered

Most flooring experts will say that the ideal amount of exposed floor around a rug is 18 inches, especially in enclosed rooms. However, in some cases, a bigger rug that covers more flooring in a smaller room will trick the eye to look more spacious, so opt for only 10 inches of exposed flooring around the perimeter.

2. Legs Off

If you choose a small rug, set furniture back so no legs touch it. Pieces situated around the perimeter will maximize the space while showing off the details of the rug’s design, which is especially effective if the purpose is to bring color and patterns into a neutral space.

3. Legs On

With rugs 9’ x 12’ or larger, place every part of the furniture on top of them. This approach works especially well in living rooms with multiple seating areas, making them feel more complete and pulled together. Each arrangement can be organized with its own rug, and borders for each section are clearly laid out.

4. Front Legs On

5. Combination Approach

Sometimes the best rule is to break the rules, or bend them to suit your living room’s dimensions. Take a look at the shape of the room and experiment with different concepts. You may find that having the couch’s front legs on the rug with coordinating chairs completely off is the best way to tie your decor together.
