Whether you rely on a smart home system or just need to get online, having working WiFi in your house is essential. When your internet goes down, it can be anything from a minor nuisance to an emergency. When that happens, try these troubleshooting tips to fix the issue.

How to Fix the Internet in Your Smart Home

1. Slow Internet

If the internet is slow in only part of the house, check your router placement. Router signal deteriorates the farther you are from the unit, so move it to a more central location or add a second router to your smart home system. If the signal is slow all over, plug your device in directly to test the speed. If it’s still slow, call your ISP.

2. Connection Drops Suddenly

Smart HomeIf your internet connection cuts out, check to make sure your router is still on, connected, and working. If it is, you are likely receiving interference from other devices—whether it’s your neighbor’s WiFi or your microwave. Try changing your router’s channel for a clearer signal.

3. Frequent Router Crashes

If your router crashes once, the old “turn it off and on again” trick is probably all you need. But if it happens frequently, you may need to do a hard reset. Use a paper clip or other small object to press the reset button, then set up your router again with a new password.

4. Forgotten Password

A hard reset also works when you’ve forgotten your login information. Reset the unit, then choose a password which is easier to remember but still secure. One of the best ways to do this is to come up with a simple sentence—something like “My dog’s name is Fido” or “I like camping on the beach,” and use the initial letter of each word to create the password.

5. Connected But No Access

If your device shows you’re connected to the WiFi but you have no internet access, try connecting directly to the modem. If this gets you internet access, the router needs to be reset. But, if you still can’t get online, you’re having an outage and should contact your ISP.
