Filters are common on newer septic tanks, and they serve an important purpose in your waste management system. Cleaning your filter is a separate task from tank pumping, but it is just as important. If your system has one, know what it does and how often you should have it cleaned.

Guide to Septic Tank Filters

What They Are

septic tankSeptic tank filters are responsible for catching any particles left inside the effluent, or the liquid waste which moves through the system. The tanks are designed to let solids sink down to the bottom of the tank, but some particles will be left behind in the liquid waste. By keeping those larger particles from being sent to the leach field, the filter improves the field’s efficiency and extends its lifespan, as they would otherwise clog up the delicate plumbing in the field.

How Often They Need Cleaned

When the filter clogs, it will stop the effluent from flowing out to the drain field. This leaves the tank to fill up faster than it’s designed to and subsequently back up into the plumbing of the house. Symptoms will start with slow draining sinks and other drains, and eventually the toilets will back up while drains will stop working altogether.

Along with septic tank cleaning every three to five years, the filter should also be cleaned. If the filter still clogs too often on this schedule, have it cleaned between your pumping appointments as well.
