Out of all the rooms in your home, the kitchen is probably the one where you’ll do the most work to keep your family fed. For this reason, you want the kitchen design to be efficient and functional, to make the best use of your space. The kitchen island can’t just be dead space, so here are some suggestions to make the best use of it.

Island Design Tips

1. Leave Space Around It

You want to be able to move freely through the kitchen, so keep this in mind when planning your island’s size and placement. Leave a walkway 42 inches wide at minimum around all sides of the island, and at least 48 inches if you want to have multiple people cooking at once.

2. Know What You’ll Use It For

As you start designing the island, think about exactly what purpose it will serve. Will you use the counter space for prep work? Will you serve food there? Do you want a stovetop there for cooking? The primary use of the island should be supported by your design choices.

3. Put Appliances in It

The oven, stove, dishwasher, and other appliances can fit in any appropriately sized island. Just be aware, you may need to run water, gas, or electrical lines to the area, so factor this into the cost of the kitchen remodeling plans.

4. Create Storage Space

5. Store Seating

Alternatively, if you’re using the island to serve food, leave a hollow space underneath it to house the chairs or stools you’ll be using. This will make it more comfortable for the family to sit at the island, and make sure the furniture takes up less space when not in use.
