If you’re planning to pave a road, driveway, parking lot, or other asphalt paving project, you’ll need to choose the type of asphalt you’d like to use. Two main options are hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mix asphalt (WMA). Hot mix asphalt is the more common choice and is used in highways and roads across the country.

A Guide to Hot and Warm Mix Asphalt

What Is the Difference?

Hot mix asphalt is a combination of sand and gravel bound together with asphalt cement, a petroleum product. The formula is usually about 95% rock and sand aggregates, and five percent binding. Warm mix asphalt, on the other hand, uses a number of additives including wax and zeolites, a type of mineral used as an absorbent and catalyst. Where HMA is usually prepared at 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, WMA is created and transported at 200 to 250 degrees thanks to the additives which make it easier to pour and spread.

What Are the Benefits of HMA?

AsphaltHot mix asphalt is durable, flexible, and weather resistant, lasting for years after it is laid. It also comes in a number of different formulations designed to meet the specific needs of the project it’s being used for. Some formulations provide extra traction for vehicles, while other formulations can be applied very thinly while still maintaining their durability for a low-profile road. Some are used as the base layer of asphalt road pavement because they are effective at draining water away from the surface. Your asphalt contractor will help you select the best formulation or combination of them for your project.
