Winter weather can freeze water where it stands inside your pipes, spigots, and outdoor water features. Unfortunately, because water expands when it freezes, this can cause an incredible amount of damage that requires emergency plumbing repairs. However, just a few steps to winterize your outdoor plumbing can help prevent these problems.

Tips for Winterizing Outdoor Plumbing

1. Insulate Exterior Pipes

If you have pipes that run outdoors or along exterior walls, they’re susceptible to freezing. Insulate exterior pipes carefully with foam covers that prevent heat transfer and freezing. If you have a home with pipes that run along exterior walls, have the walls professionally insulated to prevent stark temperature changes. This will prevent rapid expansion and melting, which will cause major damage to pipes.

2. Remove Garden Hoses plumbing repairs

Hoses can trap a small amount of water between the spigot and the hose, where it can freeze and break your outdoor pipes. To prevent problems, remove garden hoses, and insulate your outdoor spigot with a temporary foam cover. Make sure to drain your hoses as well, as water can freeze inside them and cause cracks.

3. Partially Drain Ponds and Pools

Another great way to prevent the need for plumbing repairs is partially draining exterior ponds and pools. While both ponds and pools may need to be partially filled to preserve the structural integrity of the hole, draining some moisture out of the structures can help to prevent cracks around the edges, and keep hoses from being submerged in freezing water.
