Finding the right laundry care schedule can be difficult, since each item in your home requires unique wash frequencies. Washing items too often will wear them out prematurely, while waiting too long to clean items will allow bacteria and grime to fester. Here’s what you should know about common household items and how often you should wash them.

Laundry Care Schedule for Common Household Garments

1. Jeans

Washing jeans too often will fade the dye in them and thin out the fabric. As a general rule, wash your jeans in cold water with like fabrics every four to five times you wear them. How frequently you wash them is up to your discretion, however. If they get particularly dirty or sweaty after just one use, it’s best to wash them immediately.

2. Towels

Hang them up in between uses so they can dry completely, as mildew will grow on damp fabrics. Hand towels or kitchen towels should be washed every one or two days to prevent harmful bacteria such as E.coli from buidling up.

3. Bedding

Sheets and pillowcases should be washed at least once every two weeks. How frequently you wash them is up to your discretion; if it’s hot out and you’re sweating, for example, you should wash them once a week. In colder weather, the two-week rule is probably appropriate. Comforters should be washed every two to four weeks.

4. Underwear

Underwear — such as briefs and panties — should be washed after every wear. Bras should be washed after every two to three wears. To keep the cups from getting warped, place the bra in a mesh garment bag while it’s in the washer and hang it up to dry rather than placing it in the dryer.

5. Pajamas

Most pajamas need laundry care after every three or four wears. People who shower just before going to bed can typically get away with washing them once a week. If you get night sweats, then wash them after every one or two wears.
