With today’s hectic schedules and lifestyles, it’s easy to get stressed out. Stress creates muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, often resulting in stiffness and pain. What better way to alleviate that stress than with a spa massage? To maximize the benefits of this relaxing treatment, care for yourself properly afterwards by following the do’s and don’ts below.

Do:

Drink plenty of water.

While you should always stay hydrated, it’s especially important to do so after a massage. Drinking plenty of water helps to replace any lost fluids. Failing to drink enough water will leave you feeling lightheaded and fatigued.

Take it easy.

Although massages are relaxing, it’s important to remember your muscles have gone through a workout of sorts and may feel sore. They need time to recover. Instead of running errands, hitting the gym, or going out for a night on the town after your treatment, go home to rest and relax.

Take a warm bath or shower.

massageTo further help your muscles recover from their workout and promote tranquility, take a warm bath or shower post-massage. Comfortably warm water will soothe any aches. Avoid excessively hot or cold water. While there’s some evidence to suggest that extreme water temperatures have therapeutic effects, warm water is the best way to relax. Include Epsom salts or an aromatherapy bath bomb to fully de-stress.

Don’t:

Drink coffee, soda, or alcohol.

These three types of beverages have diuretic effects, which means they increase your body’s need for fluid instead of replacing what you lost. Drink only water following a massage.

Engage in heavy exercise.

As stated above, a massage puts your muscles through a lot. Give them time to relax and recover. Stretching and very light exercise are fine, but now’s not the time for your cardio kickboxing class.

Forget to book another massage.

There are no negative side effects associated with getting regular massages, so go ahead and book another before you leave the spa. This treatment promotes relaxation, improves sleep, and reduces stress – all excellent reasons to make routine appointments.
