The springs are essential components of your garage door, since they counteract the force of gravity to make opening and shutting easier. There are two main types of garage door springs: the torsion spring and the extension spring. Whether you’re looking for new springs or want to maintain your old ones, it’s important to know the difference between the two.

Torsion vs. Extension Garage Door Springs: A Guide

Torsion Spring

garage door springsLike the name suggests, torsion spring systems use torque to open and close the garage door. To apply force, the coil is wound around a metal shaft installed above the door opening. When the door is opened, the coil unwinds and releases stored energy to open the door. Torsion springs are durable, and come in a variety of lengths and sizes to meet your door’s specifications. The main benefit of torsion springs is that they’re durable and support heavy weight, making them ideal for both commercial purposes and residential garage doors. However, for this reason, they’re also more expensive. Be sure to spray your torsion springs with garage door lubricant at least twice a year to keep them in optimal condition.

Extension Spring

Extension garage door springs are most commonly used for residential purposes. They run parallel to the horizontal tracks and are located on both sides of the door. When the door is closed, the springs are stretched to support the door. When the door is opened, the tension in the extended springs allows the door to move easily. Extension springs are more affordable than torsion springs. The main disadvantage of this system is that the springs sustain more wear and tear over time. As with torsion springs, apply lubricant regularly. If you hear squeaking even after lubricating, contact your local garage door professional for assistance.
