If your lawn has experienced weather damage and overall wear and tear, sod is a great way to revitalize it. With the right game plan, you can achieve a vibrant green surface without the wait of natural grass, and you can be confident it maintains its quality going forward. Sod installation is extremely DIY-friendly, and while you’re paying a premium for it up front, you’ll enjoy lasting results from the investment.

6 Steps to Follow When Installing Sod

1. Make a Plan

First, you need to know where the sod will go. Map out and measure the target area so you’ll know how much sod to purchase. Also, consider the type of sod; Bermuda and St. Augustine are great for homes and golf courses because of their rich color and durability, while zoysia sod is perfect for athletic fields because of its fine blades.

2. Rake

You need a smooth, clean surface so that the sod can easily take hold in the soil. Remove all roots, stones, and other items that can get in the way. It's also good to loosen the top 6 inches of the soil and level the area so the sod lays flat.

3. Apply Fertilizer

Once the area is level, apply a layer of fertilizer, preferably a slow-release 10-10-10 formula to get the best results. If you aren’t sure what best suits your needs, consult a sodding services professional for further advice.

4. Lay Staggered Rows

5. Work Gaps & Odd Spaces

Once the bulk of the sod is down, fill in any remaining gaps and awkward spaces around the edges. It’s good to stomp down surrounding areas and roll out any sod that isn’t sitting flat. Work to make everything as neat and uniform as possible to ensure it looks natural.

6. Water

Once your sod is in place, water it generously to help the soil settle. Avoid walking on it as much as possible directly after installation. Aim to water the sod every day in the morning for the first week, and apply fertilizer 3 to 4 weeks after.
