If your doctor has diagnosed you with diabetes, it can be overwhelming and a bit scary. But you aren’t alone — the condition affects more than 100 million Americans. With proper management, diabetics can live perfectly happy and healthy lives. Since November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, here is what you should know about the disease and how to keep it under control.

Two Types of Diabetes

Type 1

Once known as juvenile-onset diabetes, Type 1 usually develops in children or young adults. It’s caused by an auto-immune condition in which the body attacks its own insulin-producing cells. As a result, the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, which is a hormone needed to produce energy. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include abnormal thirst, frequent urination, lack of energy, constant hunger, blurred vision, and sudden weight loss.

Type 2

Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset, is the predominant version of the condition and can occur at any age. It affects the way the body metabolizes sugar. With Type 2, your body either resits the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce enough of it. In addition to thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue, patients may also notice tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, recurrent fungal infection of the skin, and slow-healing wounds.

How Can You Manage the Condition?

doctorIf you notice signs of diabetes, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis. The illness cannot be cured but it is treatable. People with Type I diabetes usually require insulin injections every day in order to control their blood’s glucose levels. Those with Type II can often manage the condition through diet and exercise. If that’s not enough, diabetes medication or insulin injections may be necessary.

A healthy lifestyle is also important. Regular exercise and a nutritious diet can help combat obesity, which is a risk factor for Type II diabetes. Avoid smoking, which raises blood sugar, and take any medications as prescribed. Your doctor can develop a treatment plan that suits your individual needs.
