Since a martini can be made a variety of ways, preferences will vary depending on the diner. In most cases, though, the difference between a good and unforgettable cocktail is the way you order it. The guide below explains how to tell your bartender to craft your next drink, including how to receive the right spirits, preparation, and adaptations.

Choice of Alcohol Bon Secour Martinis

Martinis are gin cocktails, so this spirit will give you the classic flavor. If you have a favorite gin, ask if your bartender has it available. They can also tell you about their preferred top-shelf brands. Should you find gin to be too strong or botanical, ask for vodka instead.

If you don’t specify anything else, your bartender will probably add a splash of dry vermouth. Additional preferences include dry, wet, perfect, or sweet. Dry means you’ll only get a small amount of dry vermouth to balance out the flavor, while extra dry will give you a few drops—or none at all.

Wet martinis add more dry vermouth. Perfect martinis combine equal parts dry and sweet. If you prefer sweet vermouth only, explain this when you order.

Drink Preparation

Now it’s time to decide if you want your drink shaken or stirred. If it’s shaken, it’ll go into a cocktail shaker for a vigorous rattling. Stirred means it’ll be placed into the shaker with ice and gently stirred for about 30 seconds before going into the glass. Some drinkers like their cocktail mixed thoroughly, while others prefer a smoother mouthfeel.

Order “on the rocks” to have your martini in a tumbler with fresh ice. Say you want it “straight up” to get it without ice in the classic glass. If you prefer a lemon twist instead of an olive, ask for it “with a twist.”

Cocktail Variations

After requesting the details above, your bartender is ready to craft your drink. However, you are welcome to ask for a few of the most popular variations on the standard. Dirty martinis are made with a splash of olive juice, while Vesper martinis contain a dose of Lillet Blanc.

Gibsons are garnished with a pearl onion, and aged martinis feature barrel-aged gin. Some bars and restaurants are known for their fruity vodka cosmopolitans, lemon drops, or apple-tinis. Of course, the discerning drinker will recommend the classic.
