Most seniors hope to age in place – that is, stay in their own homes. Although this choice offers them a great deal of independence, it also carries some risks, especially for those experiencing mobility, stability, and vision issues. Whether the home is an apartment for rent, a luxury senior living village, or a private home, following the three tips below will make your loved one’s space safer and more comfortable.

How to Enhance Senior Safety at Home

1. Install Grab Bars

Installing grab bars near stairs and bathroom fixtures is an easy and inexpensive way to help seniors guard against slips and falls. Add them in strategic locations, such as near the toilet and bathtub. Consult a professional to determine the most convenient positioning for your loved one’s height and weight. If your loved one is living in an apartment for rent, speak to the landlord about making alterations. Placing nonslip mats inside showers and on the floor in front of sinks also will go a long way toward preventing injuries.

2. Secure Rugs

apartments for rentRugs, mats, and carpets are aesthetically pleasing and provide a warm, cushioned surface to walk on. They’re generally much safer than slippery wood or tile, but if they’re not securely affixed to the floor, they pose a hazard. Look for homes or apartments to rent that have properly installed carpeting. If that’s not an option, use products such as nonslip pads, rug grippers, carpet tape, carpet tacks, and Velcro to keep rugs in place. If scatter rugs, runners, or mats curl up along the edges, replace them with those that lie flat and have nonslip backings to minimize the likelihood of tripping.

3. Enhance Lighting

Poor lighting is a serious risk for vision-impaired seniors. Replace any burned-out or dim bulbs with new ones – preferably LEDs, because they emit brighter light and are easier on the electric bill. Consider installing motion-sensor lights in places such as the garage, front steps, and entryways so lights automatically turn on as soon as your loved one approaches the home. This type of lighting also discourages would-be prowlers.
