Static electricity occurs when friction causes a charge. For pets, this static affects their fur, leading to an electrical surge that makes their hair stand on end and zap them as they pass by people or objects. There are ways to reduce static and keep your pet comfortable. Below are a few cat and dog grooming tips to keep the charges at bay.

How to Reduce Static in Pet Fur

1. Buy the Right Tools

Instead of plastic brushes and combs, use metal varieties. Plastic leads to more static production, which then shocks your pet when you groom them. You can also purchase special ionic cat and dog grooming tools that create positive ions to balance the negative charge.

2. Add Humidity

Static conducts better in a dry environment. Consider adding a humidifier to replace your home’s moisture, especially in winter when the air is naturally drier. Make sure your home’s relative humidity does not dip below 30% to keep your pet protected from dry, crackling air.

Always use shampoos and conditioners with moisturizers during cat and dog grooming. Seek products that feature oatmeal or aloe vera, and apply spray-on conditioners before grooming. Another way to condition fur is to add omega 3 supplements to their diet.

4. Swap Materials

Whether it is their bedding or a cute sweater, choose natural fabric. Cotton and wool do not create as much static electricity as fleece. If your pet likes to lounge on blankets or pillows, consider swapping them out for the winter.

5. Mist Their Coat

For a quick fix, lightly spray a little water on their fur. If your pet does not do well with a spritz of moisture, spray your hands first, and then pet them. You can even add a little conditioner to the spray bottle for a solution to keep electrical charges at bay.
