A lumpectomy is a form of breast cancer surgery used to remove tumors in the breast tissue. The procedure itself is brief and typically takes under an hour, but recovery can be a long process. After your surgery, you will likely be scheduled for a follow-up within one to two weeks. During this appointment, your surgeon will make sure you’re healing as expected. In the meantime, there are a few measures you can take at home to support the process.

How to Promote Healing After Breast Cancer Surgery

1. Care for Your Incision

Be sure to follow the instructions your surgeon has provided for wound care. You may also be directed to change the bandage on your own, or in some cases, wait until your first follow-up for the doctor to change it.

2. Empty the Drainage Device

Sometimes, patients receive drainage devices which stay in place until their follow-up appointments. It’s important to empty the device as it fills up with fluid to reduce the risk of infections. Your nurse or doctor will show you how to empty the drain and measure the fluid, which will gradually decrease.

3. Perform Arm Exercises

If your surgeon has instructed you to do so, begin performing your arm exercises the morning after your procedure. You may feel some tightness in your chest and armpit, which is normal. Only hold each pose until you feel a gentle stretch.

4. Take Sponge Baths

Usually, the incision for a lumpectomy should not get wet for at least a week after the surgery. To prevent getting water in the incision, take sponge baths instead of showers. After your doctor approves it, you can begin taking showers again.

5. Wear a Supportive Bra

A supportive bra will help to prevent movement, which could cause discomfort after the procedure. Some women find sports bras are most comfortable, but no matter which style you choose, look for a closure system that won’t require you to lift the bra over your head.
