Just like a car, a go-kart or ATV needs consistent maintenance to keep it in good working order and maximize its performance. But unlike a car, an outdoor vehicle’s machinery is often exposed to the elements. Here’s what you need to do to keep it safe and running.

How to Maintain Your Go-Kart

1. Keep the Oil Flowing

Oil lubricates and cools your engine, which is essential to keep friction and resistance from tearing the machinery apart. Check your oil frequently and top it off as needed. About every 25 hours of operation, change the oil—if you drive it infrequently, do it once a season.

2. Inspect the Spark Plugs

Go-KartEvery time you change the oil, take out the spark plugs. Clean off any dirt and look for signs of corrosion or wear. You should expect to replace your spark plugs about once a year for the best performance.

3. Focus on the Chain

Your chain is central to the machine’s operation, so give it a look as part of your regular maintenance. Keep it well lubricated and watch for stretching. When the chain stretches, you will need to remove links to resize it and maintain the right amount of tension. There should be about half an inch of play left when you’re done with the adjustment.

4. Check the Brakes

You definitely don’t want your brakes to seize, so be sure to lubricate the brake and throttle ends regularly. Pay attention to the brakes as you drive—if they seem soft, if they stick, or if they don’t have enough stopping power, get prompt repairs.

5. Store It Correctly

At the end of the season, empty your ATV’s gas and oil tanks, and leave them open in a ventilated area to let the last of the fuel evaporate. Lubricate the cables, then cover the vehicle securely with a tarp and store it out of the elements. This will help keep it safe and clean for next year.
