If you’ve never installed a new asphalt driveway on your property, you may not be familiar with the process of creating a long-lasting and attractive pavement surface. It takes more than just mixing up a batch of asphalt, but thankfully, paving contractors have a simple procedure for getting beautiful, durable results. Here’s what to expect from your asphalt driveway installation.

How Driveways Are Paved

1. Excavate

To prepare the area for asphalt, your contractors will use excavators and skid steers to clear away any plants, debris, or soil that is too soft to support your new driveway. They’ll also remove any existing damaged paving.

2. Grade

Asphalt surfaces are built on a bed of gravel, which is sloped to prevent water from pooling and to keep the surface as smooth as possible. The gravel will be poured, distributed, and compacted to form a stable, supportive foundation.

3. Lay Asphalt

Asphalt is made up of a small amount of petroleum-based asphalt cement and a large amount of crushed gravel and sand. This mixture is heated to soften it, then poured and pushed into place over the bed of gravel.

4. Compact

DrivewayTo make the surface smooth and durable, it’s once more pressed into place with a large, heavy roller. This way, none of the small gravel pieces inside will stick out from the surface. The edges are also finished and compacted to keep them neat and prevent protrusions that might break off in the future.
