The Founding of Denali National Park

The park was created through the actions of Charles Sheldon, an early 20th-century naturalist who was fascinated by sheep and traveled around the world to learn about different species. The land that is today Denali was home to Dall sheep, which were white animals unique to Alaska. 

When Sheldon arrived in the winter of 1907 to 1908, however, he found the sheep were being slaughtered excessively for their hides. Realizing the negative effects of overhunting, he appealed to President Woodrow Wilson to create a national park and save the animals from extinction. In 1917, decades before Alaska was recognized as a state, the president made McKinley National Park, which is more commonly known today as Denali.
