If you own or manage agricultural property, you may wonder about the best ways to store seeds between growing seasons. During the winter months, it is important that you keep heirloom, hybrid, and other types of seeds cool, dry, and covered. Use the following guide to learn more about proper seed storage.

How Should You Store Seeds?

seedsDetermine How Long You’ll Need to Store Them

Estimate how long you’ll need to store your seeds. For shorter term storage, i.e. a year or two, use your refrigerator. Place a packet of silica gel or a couple scoops of powdered milk into the container with the seeds to keep them dry. For longer term storage, use the same methods above, but put the container in the freezer instead of the refrigerator. Make sure it is airtight so as not to expose your seeds to moisture.

Consider the Types of Seeds You Need to Store

Though general rules of storage apply to many different types of seeds, others may have special requirements. For instance, heirloom, hybrid, and GMO seeds need to be completely dried out prior to storing them. Rather than using a food dehydrator, put your seeds into a dish of white rice that has been dried in the oven at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. This will render your seeds dormant without exposing them to excessive heat that sometimes causes sterility.

Keep Them Cool & Dry

One of the most effective ways to keep seeds cool and dry is by placing them into an envelope prior to putting them in a freezer bag or container. Remove all of the air from the bag or container, and place it in the back of your refrigerator or freezer where it will remain undisturbed. Keep things organized and simple by separating your seeds for each consecutive planting season into different containers, and label them carefully.
