Running is a popular way to keep in shape and relax the mind. It takes discipline and conditioning. It’s important to follow practices, regardless of your skill level, to prevent injuries and chronic pain, as many of these can leave you sidelined for months and require physical therapy. To avoid these issues, follow the tips below each time you run.

3 Ways to Prevent Injuries From Running

1. Warm Up

Whether it’s on a treadmill or outdoors, always warm up before setting off on your jog. Your muscles and joints need to get going slowly before you put stress on them, so stretch dynamically and do some light cardio to prepare. You.tube has various instructional videos of dynamic stretching before running. Static stretching, which is most commonly thought of when thinking of stretching, can actually lead to injury because it inhibits muscle performance.  Dynamic stretching allows the muscles to prepare for the motion and control needed when running.  You’ll be primed for optimal performance after 10 minutes of warming up and can be confident you won’t suffer injuries that require physical therapy.

2. Wear the Right Shoes

physical therapyRunning puts continued stress on your feet. If they don’t efficiently absorb the shock, it can lead to arch, ankle, and knee injuries. To prevent these, select the right shoes. Visit an athletics store and try on specialized pairs. They should fit comfortably and provide plenty of support so you can put in miles without experiencing pain. If you see a physical therapy professional, ask them for shoe recommendations.

3. Pay Attention to Your Body

Sometimes, your body will let you know if you’re pushing it too hard. If you experience unexplained pain or are exhausted, stop. Soreness the next day also warrants a day off. Also, if you’re just starting out, start slowly so your body has time to get used to the routine. Listening to your body is essential for injury prevention and will also help you improve your technique. Soon you’ll experience harmony within your body along the path to better health.
