During the harsh Oklahoma winter, many RV owners choose to put their vehicle in storage to protect it from the elements. Even though it will be covered and not exposed to the wind and snow as it would in your driveway, there are still certain precautions you should take to ensure it’s drivable come springtime. Below are three steps to take before locking up your RV for the winter.

How to Ready Your RV for Storage

1. Fill Cracks

Rodents may take advantage of your absence and use the RV as a nest for the winter, especially if you use open-air storage instead of indoor. They’ll wreak havoc on the interior of your RV, including any upholstery and wiring, resulting in expensive repair or exterminator bills. Do a thorough inspection of the exterior of your van and patch any gaps where daylight gets through with fiberglass.

2. Ventilate It

storageIf the RV is locked up completely, the interior will become humid and there will be nowhere for moisture to escape. Moisture may eventually lead to the development of mold. To prevent this problem, open the vents. Put special covers over them so they don’t let debris inside.

3. Protect the Tires

The tires on the vehicle are affected by both temperature and air pressure and will be damaged if not properly inflated. Look in the owner’s manual for the proper amount of air to put in them. If they’ll be in open-air storage, cover the tires so they’re not degraded by the sunlight. Additionally, try to put something in between the rubber and the ground so the treads aren’t damaged if the pavement freezes over.
