A functional bathroom is a key part of your property. Ensuring that all plumbing components stay in working order for years to come means taking a few regular maintenance steps. Below is a breakdown of how to keep each plumbing element in your bathroom in peak condition and stop problems before they start.

How to Maintain Bathroom Plumbing

1. Sink

Fixing sink leaks quickly is necessary to stop more damage and avoid costly water bills. To prevent leaky faucets, periodically tighten internal components and replace any that are worn or rusted. Check faucet aerators as well for mineral and sediment buildup that will cause low water pressure. Carefully unscrew the aerator and remove it from the faucet. A small brush in dipped in vinegar is usually adequate to remove clogs in the aerator’s tiny openings.

2. Toilet

Open the tank and inspect the inner workings of your toilet’s plumbing. Make sure the valves are connected and the flap is shutting to control water flow. To prevent overflows and severe clogs, never flush anything other than waste and toilet paper. Avoid feminine hygiene products and so-called flushable wipes, since these will create blockages. If you have an older toilet model, consider installing a new toilet that employs a gravity-flush or pressure-assist system. These options rely on gravity and pressure to power the flush, which helps conserve water and reduces wear and tear on your toilet.

3. Shower & Bathtub

plumbingLike sink faucets, shower heads will also eventually suffer from loose parts and mineral buildup. Simply unscrew the swivel ball nut and the collar nut. Clean the holes with a thin wire and rinse away particles with fresh water. Soak the shower head in vinegar by placing a plastic bag filled with the liquid tightly over the head, affixing it with a rubber band, and leaving it on overnight. Brush away lime and other sediment with a damp cloth. To keep plumbing clear of hair and large debris, install traps on your drains that will catch hair and thick soap scum before they head down your pipes.
