On November 8, catch up on your oral health care and visit your dentist for National X-ray Day. From exposing cavities to uncovering infections, dental X-rays can help your dentist diagnose numerous conditions. Even with the advancements in modern dental technology, X-rays still play an important role in monitoring your overall oral health.

The History of Dental X-Rays

In 1895, the German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-ray imaging or radiography. Through trial and error, he discovered the rays could show imaging underneath the skin but did not pass through bones or teeth. While X-rays were initially utilized for industrial purposes, medical professionals like dentists quickly caught onto the technology, and the first dental X-ray of a living person was taken in 1896 in the U.S.

Why Are X-Rays Important?

dentistWhile dentists are responsible for keeping your smile healthy, a large part of that relies on the health of your gums and other areas that can’t be seen without X-rays. Dental X-rays can identify many oral health issues before they become a more severe problem, like cavities or infections. When caught early, conditions like cavities require a more simplistic treatment, like a filling, as opposed to letting it worsen and needing a crown or root canal. X-rays can also alert your dentist to other conditions that may not be visible to the eye, including diseases in your jawbones and some types of tumors.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Some people are concerned about dental X-rays because you’re required to wear a lead vest and the technician has to leave the room to take the shot. However, these steps are simply a precaution, and thanks to modern technology, radiation levels are typically minuscule. In fact, the American Dental Association releases updates and publishes recommendations to help dentists ensure exposure is as low as possible.
