With all of the adjustments you make to keep you and your family comfortable, it can be easy to forget that the HVAC system affects pets, as well. If left unchecked, there are a handful of ways heating, cooling, and ventilation can present unique dangers to your furry friends. Thankfully, it's easy to avoid any worst-case scenarios, so here are a few do’s and don'ts to follow to ensure your pets stay safe around your home's HVAC system all year-round.

Do:

Use vent covers.

Using too many vent covers throughout the home can cause your HVAC system to work harder than necessary, but there are a few areas in which they can help. Applying them to floor vents, for instance, is a good way to keep your pets safe from these exposed areas. This also serves as a reminder to keep the filters clean, so the air quality remains consistent.

Be aware of temperature settings.

HVACPets may not require the same settings as humans to maintain a comfortable environment, but you should always keep their safety in mind when setting the programmable thermostat. Temperatures should fall between 68 and 78 degrees while you’re away during the year, but you should check with your veterinarian in case there are requirements for your specific breed.

Don't:

Leave pets alone with heaters.

You should never leave your home with a space heater powered on for any duration. Even if you're still at home, however, be aware of where your pets are in relation to any standalone heating units. Leaving your pet alone with the heater could lead to serious injury or a potential fire, so switch it off and give it a chance to cool before you leave the room.

Leave HVAC system rooms open.

In a similar vein, you should keep the doors to any rooms that contain HVAC components sealed when not in use. Between exposure to dangerous equipment and a pet's propensity for chewing, giving them free access to these areas isn't a good idea. For the safest results, only adults and a heating and cooling specialist should be allowed near the system.
