Winter will soon be here, bringing with it cold weather and snowy days as it does every year. After months of storage, you’ll soon have to bring out the snow thrower again. But is it ready to take on the season? Don’t wait to get hit by a snowstorm only to find out the machine doesn’t work. Here’s what you should do to be prepared.

What You Can Do

Prior to using it in winter, inspect the blades and drive belts for wear and tear or signs of damage, and have them switched out if necessary. Tighten up any loose nuts and bolts and replace missing ones as well. Apply lubrication where needed, such as the drive and chassis. For a faster start and better performance, install a new spark plug, even if your old one seems to be in good condition. Although engine oil won’t wear out and get old, it can become contaminated by moisture from air and combustion byproducts buildup in it. As such, it’s best to change your oil, before revving up the snow thrower. The oil change serves to lubricate the engine parts, reducing their wear and tear. Before winter sets in, you’ll also need to drain the machine’s gas tank and add fresh fuel with stabilizer. Be sure to run the engine for a couple of minutes so that treated fuel reaches the carburetor prior to use. Keep in mind, however, that each make and model will have slightly different maintenance procedure. Check your owner’s manual for specific instruction.

Why Have It Prepped?

Preparing your snow thrower for winter use, as part of its preventive maintenance, prolongs its service life, improves performance, and reduces the need for costly repairs or early replacement. Checking your snow thrower now allows you to asses its winter-readiness and make any needed repairs so that it will be ready for use when you need it the most.
