If you want to straighten your teeth but don't want to deal with traditional braces, Invisalign® is a great alternative. Made of translucent plastic, the trays are practically invisible, so you can have orthodontic work without the hassle of metal. How exactly does it work? Learn more about the process below.

Prior to Treatment

The first step is to meet your dentist to discuss Invisalign and determine whether you're a good candidate for this process. For example, if your teeth need substantial treatment, this might not be a good fit. Once you're approved, they'll take pictures of your smile, impressions of your teeth, and some X-rays. After that, impressions are sent to the Invisalign team, where they make a 3D model to show how your teeth will move. Once that is accepted, pending any changes, they'll send over impression trays to get started.

During the Process

invisalignTimelines can vary by person, but on average, a case is usually about a year long. You'll be able to see the end result throughout the process at each visit with your dentist. You'll need to wear your trays at least 20 to 22 hours per day for optimal results, but feel free to take them out to eat or brush and floss. About every two weeks, you'll move on to the next trays to help shift your teeth into their final spot. Fortunately, only a few teeth at a time are moved, so you won't have to worry about too much pain or pressure at one time.

After You're Finished

Once you've finished all of your trays, your dentist will take final photos and X-rays to ensure everything is where it needs to be. You'll also be fitted for retainers so that your smile doesn't shift back to where you started.
