A car is a complex, noisy machine, but when you’ve been driving for a while, you learn to recognize which sounds are normal and which aren’t. Some car noises can indicate that you need immediate auto repairs or maintenance. If you hear these sounds, visit the shop right away to get them checked out.

Which Sounds Mean You Need Auto Repairs?

1. Brake Squealing

If your brakes squeal, shriek, or grind when you use them, it’s time to have the brake pads replaced. These pads are intentionally designed to begin making this noise as a signal to you just before they wear out completely. Once they’re worn down, it becomes unsafe to drive.

2. Thumping

There are several possible causes of a thumping sound or wobbling motion in your car. A problem with the tires or a warped rotor may cause repetitive thumping. If it happens only at certain speeds, the suspension is to blame.

3. Ticking

If this doesn’t resolve the problem or your indicator lights still say the oil is low, the problem may be serious, and you should avoid driving until you’ve had an auto repair expert assess the situation.

4. Chirping

A chirp or squeal coming from the engine and not the tires is usually due to a belt that’s slipping. It’s especially obvious during acceleration. Replacing and tightening the belts will get rid of the sound and make your engine run more efficiently.

5. Hissing

An engine that hisses when driving or shortly afterward may be overheating. The problem is especially bad if you see steam—that means there’s a major coolant leak. Whether or not you see steam, stop driving as soon as you suspect an overheated engine to avoid damaging it further.
