Your septic system may be hidden beneath the ground, but it’s an essential part of your home that requires your attention. Proper maintenance will ensure it functions reliably and lengthen its usable lifespan. Septic maintenance involves working with a professional for service appointments and being smart about what you put down the drain. Here are a few septic system do’s and don’ts.

Do

Schedule regular septic tank pumping.

Because your waste solids can’t be filtered and released into the ground like liquid waste is, it will gather in your tank. This will need to be pumped out or you’ll run into issues such as blocked and backflowing drains. Most septic tanks should be pumped every three to five years, though it will vary depending on tank size and usage. Your contractor can help you determine the ideal schedule.

Limit water usage.

septic systemThe liquid waste that goes into your septic system is sent out to the drain field, which filters waste. The drain field can only handle so much liquid at once, or it will get oversaturated. Install water-saving appliances and try to limit and spread out your water usage. For example, do your laundry washing throughout the week rather than doing it all in one day.

Don’t

Put chemicals down the drain.

Your septic tank is home to bacteria that are responsible for breaking down waste, and harsh chemicals will kill them. Use only natural cleaning products that will be flushed down the drain, such as for cleaning your sink or shower.  All harsher chemicals should be disposed of properly.

Use the disposal too often.

Many people make the mistake of viewing their garbage disposal as a convenient trash can. This sends a lot of solid waste to your tank, which fills it up too quickly. Never put foods with oils, grease or fat in them down the disposal, as this will clog up your system.
