Electricity is now an essential part of everyday life, but it can be dangerous for children who don’t understand the danger it poses. There are steps that every parent should take to protect their children from the threats of electrical wiring. Start with the preventive measures below.

Steps for Safe Electrical Wiring in Children’s Bedrooms

1. Use Outlet Covers

An outlet cover fits snugly over any unused outlets. By covering up the ports, you’ll eliminate the temptation to stick fingers or metal items into the outlet, which could cause electrocution. Try to use both ports in any used outlets, so you never have an open port within reach. Cover up those that are most easily accessible and instead use the ones that are behind furniture or otherwise out of reach.

2. Avoid Extension Cords

electrical wiringExtension cords are convenient, but they can become a dangerous source of shock or electrical fire. They are more prone to overheating then your typical electrical wiring, especially when used improperly. Children can experience electrical burn if they put it in their mouth. They could also trip over the extra-long cord. If you must use one, secure it in a high place, out of reach of curious hands.

3. Create a Water-Free Zone

Children may get into the habit of keeping cups of water on their nightstands, which could spill and lead to electrical shock. Do not let children keep water near any outlets or devices, such as lamps. If they need water, have them use a secure bottle that won’t spill if it’s tipped over.
