If you’ve recently been in an automotive accident that required collision repair, then you likely needed the vehicle paint touched up in some way. In the months that follow this type of repair, the paint is more delicate than usual, so you should use caution when washing, storing, and otherwise caring for your vehicle. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

3 Tips to Maintain Your Vehicle After Collision Repair

1. Wash by Hand

The paint and finish need about one month to dry and harden completely. In that time, harsh chemicals or rough cleaners used at automatic car washes could warp or damage the paint job. Instead, use a mild soap with cool water and a soft cloth or sponge to keep it clean.

2. Wax the Vehicle

Apply a thin layer of carnauba wax—make sure the car is completely dry; otherwise, it will leave streaks. Use a microfiber cloth to gently buff the car.

3. Maintain the Car

Over the next few months, there are a few steps you can take to maintain your car’s paint job. New paint can chip easily when it comes into contact with sharp objects. Avoid driving on gravel roads or other rocky surfaces where dirt can get kicked up onto your car body. If you own a garage, park the car in it to avoid weather-related damage, debris, and bird droppings. Finally, schedule professional detailing one to two times a year to keep the car looking like new.
