Bats hibernate from late fall until early spring. For a warm place to rest, they might move into your attic, basement, or walls. A bat infestation causes major property damage as the animals huddle together, which breaks down insulation. Urine and guano can also accumulate and leave a foul stench inside the house. Looking for signs of bats as soon as you suspect a problem could prevent an infestation that would put your family’s health and comfort at risk. Below are a few tips for inspecting your property.

How to Determine Whether You Have Bats

Shine a Flashlight in the Attic

Bats enter buildings at high elevation points, so check the attic for signs of trouble first. The creatures can wiggle through holes as small as 3/8 of an inch, which means any cracks and gaps could serve as entry points. It might be difficult to see tiny holes in the ceiling, so use a flashlight to illuminate the surface. If the roof is damp and leaking, moisture should glisten in the light.

Look for Droppings Everywhere

Look for droppings in attic crawlspaces. They could also be stuck to the property facade, indicating cracks in siding are to blame for the bat infestation.

Check for Cracks in Property Foundation

Because the animals can fit through tiny spaces, gaps in the brick or concrete foundation could also lead to a bat infestation. Check the perimeter of the house for damage. This way, you’ll know where they might be located in the basement or lower floors of the house.
