Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage for many children. It’s also a fantastic way for kids to get exercise, spend time with the family and friends, and enjoy nature. To keep it fun, here are a couple of safety rules to consider the next time your kid gets on the bike.

Bike Safety Tips All Kids Should Know

1. Wear a Helmet

Remind your children they should never get on their bicycle without putting their helmet on first. These items offer vital protection against brain injuries and head trauma in the event of a fall or collision. Lead by example and wear yours, too.

2. Skip the Sandals

bikeIt’s tempting to spend the entire summer in flip-flops. Sandals don’t provide any protection against cuts and scrapes when you’re riding a bike. They’re not sturdy and have no traction, making it more difficult to keep your feet on the pedals. Also, they leave your feet exposed to the chain of the bike.

3. Follow the Rules of the Road

Cyclists are subject to the same road rules as the drivers of vehicles. Kids should know to stop and look all ways at each stop sign and to ride with traffic, not against it. Furthermore, it’s best to keep them off the sidewalks. Have them practice in the driveway or park instead, and this includes hand signals for turning.
