Trying to conceive can be a roller coaster ride of emotions, especially if it isn’t happening right away or you know you are dealing with infertility issues. To help your body be at its optimum for conception, consider these tips for trying to get pregnant. The guide will explain activities that may be holding you back from becoming a parent.

5 Habits You Should Quit to Aid Conception

1. Smoking

infertilityNumerous studies have shown that smoking is linked to infertility. Smokers have reduced ovarian function and take longer to conceive than non-smokers. Smoking also increases the risk of miscarriage and ectopic — tubal — pregnancies.

2. Caffeine

One to two cups of coffee a day is okay — around 300 milligrams — but more than that can reduce conception rates. High caffeine consumption can increase the risk of miscarriage and impacts the absorption of iron. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate, and caffeinated sodas should be limited to improve your chances of getting pregnant.

3. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption above two drinks per day is linked to irregular periods, hormone disruption, and lack of ovulation. It’s best to not drink at all if you are treating infertility. Also, you may be pregnant for some time before you know it, and excessive drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Men should consider cutting back to less than five drinks per week; even moderate drinking can impact sperm quality.

4. Extreme Exercise

Exercise is crucial for health, and being a couch potato won’t help your chances of conception. But, extreme amounts of exercise can negatively impact fertility as well. Choose regular, moderate activities such as golf, walking, cycling, or swimming. If you are a regular runner, cut back on mileage to ensure that periods won’t be interrupted.

5. Stressing Out

While stress is a part of modern life, too much chronic stress has been linked to infertility. If you are trying to conceive, get plenty of sleep, eat well, and have stress management techniques that you enjoy. Yoga, meditation, acupuncture, or creative hobbies reduce stress and may help your chances of conception.
