If you’re self-conscious about the color of your teeth, teeth whitening can help give you a smile you’re proud to show off. While the process is generally safe, there are still steps you can take to ensure that you have a good experience and are able to maintain the results afterward. Here's a closer look at actions to take and avoid.

Do:

Talk to your dentist.

While store shelves may be full of at-home whitening kits, they are less likely to give you the look you want. Uneven application, for example, could cause your teeth to be brighter in some areas than others. Additionally, there is a chance that your gums and teeth aren't healthy enough for the chemicals used in this process.

Instead, have a conversation with a dentist. If they determine you are a good candidate for the treatment, they are better equipped and trained to restore your smile to pristine condition.

Try a sensitivity toothpaste.

After teeth whitening, your teeth and gums might be more sensitive than normal. However, by switching to a sensitivity toothpaste, you will be able to limit this side-effect.

Don’t:

Forget to brush and floss.

Eat foods that stain.

Red wine, tea and coffee, and soda can stain your teeth and strip away the protective enamel. Consume these in moderation, and brush your teeth as soon as possible afterward. If you don't have access to a toothbrush, rinse your mouth out with water to remove lingering particles and juices. Alternatively, use a straw to prevent beverages from coming into contact with your freshly whitened teeth.
