Starting a preschool program is an exciting time for both parents and toddlers. Your child will soon be surrounded by other children their age, and they’ll be learning new things that they’ll be excited to tell you about. Though, starting preschool can be an adjustment. Here’s how you can prepare your toddler for success.

How to Get Your Toddler Ready for Preschool

1. Work on Potty Training

If your child isn’t currently potty-trained, inquire with your prospective preschool program about their policies. If students are required to be potty-trained before enrolling, consider whether your child is ready for this big step. If your child can keep their diaper dry for at least an hour, they may be ready. If not, consider working on potty training with your child.

2. Foster Social Skills

While your child’s teacher will work with them to develop social skills, it’s important to have a solid foundation before their first day. Teach your toddler manners like saying please and thank you, sharing, taking turns, and following directions.

3. Encourage Communication

Your child is probably still learning the nuances of communicating their needs. This is an important skill to have in day care programs, and you should work with your toddler to develop their language skills. It can be as easy as talking to your child throughout the day.
