Asthma treatments are not universal as different people experience the condition with varying severity. You may even find your asthma management needs fluctuating with the seasons, as external factors like humidity and temperature impact symptoms. Winter weather can cause flare-ups for some individuals. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe when it’s chilly out.

How Winter Weather Impacts Asthma

Cold, dry air can cause asthma flare-ups, as your bronchial tubes become inflamed and narrow, which means less air can be taken in. The wind of winter storms can also be problematic, as it causes particles like mold and dust to blow through the air.

Unfortunately, it’s not just the weather outdoors that can cause issues. Indoor heating is another culprit. Normally, your airways are lined with a thin layer of fluid, but the dry air that comes with central heating causes this moisture to evaporate more quickly than your body can replace it. This results in irritation and swelling, which can trigger an asthma attack.

What You Can Do to Prepare

asthma treatmentIf you use asthma treatments like an inhaler, make sure these are at hand when you go outside during the winter. This is especially important if you are physically active—whether it’s going for a snowy walk or playing a round of hockey. Wear a scarf over your mouth and nose to warm up the air before it’s inhaled.

Be vigilant about avoiding other possible triggers for asthma attacks in winter. Vacuum and dust your home, and wash sheets and blankets every week to get rid of dust and other allergens. You may also want to get a humidifier to combat dry air indoors.

Studies have shown hospital admissions for asthma increase during the winter. Talk to your doctor in advance about how to prepare. Keep a diary of any asthma flare-ups and symptoms. Discuss these with your physician, who can use this information to help you identify triggers and prescribe fitting asthma treatments.
