Your child’s first dentist’s appointment is important. It sets them up for a lifelong appreciation for dental wellness, and by ensuring your little one has a positive experience, they’ll be less hesitant to return. Yet, if your child is like most, they may be a bit nervous about any new and unfamiliar experience. Here are a few things you can do to quell their nerves and make sure their first appointment goes smoothly.

A Guide to Making Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment a Positive Experience

Time It Right

Your child should have their first appointment when their first tooth erupts or by the time they turn one – whichever comes first. At this initial visit, the dentist will just take a peek to make sure everything looks like it’s developing as it should. They may also fill you in on some pediatric oral hygiene tips to make sure you’re caring for your child’s teeth properly until they are able to do so on their own.

Choose a Good Time of Day

Children who are hungry or overtired may be more likely to get upset when prompted to try a new experience.

Practice at Home

To get your child familiar with the feeling of an oral exam, you should be gently brushing using a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using no more than a rice-sized amount of paste and brushing twice per day.

Keep Them Comfortable

Lastly, to make sure your child associates the dentist’s office with a comfortable, inviting environment, allow them to bring a comfort item from home. For instance, a blanket, stuffed toy, or another familiar object may make them feel at ease during their first visit.
