In New York, you are permitted 10 violation points on your driving record, but after the 11th, your license may be suspended. For reference, a speeding ticket of up to 10 mph over the limit will net you 3 points, and for speeds of 11 to 20 mph over the limit, you'll receive 4 points. Higher speeds bring higher point totals. These points affect not only your ability to keep your driver’s license but also the amount you must pay for auto insurance. However, completing a driving school course can help in both respects. To help you understand your options, below are the two primary ways you can remove points from your New York State driving record and lower your insurance costs.

Time

For licensing purposes, points fall off your New York State driving history after 18 months from the date of conviction. However, insurance companies have their own point systems, independent of the DMV. Thus, a speeding ticket you received two years ago no longer counts against you for driver’s license renewal, but your insurer may still consider it when calculating your auto insurance rates. If you wish to remove DMV points more quickly, consider the following option.

Driving School

Driving school in Fairport, NYBy completing an approved Point & Insurance Reduction Program or PIRP course, you can remove up to 4 points from your license and reduce your auto insurance rates by at least 10% for the following three years. The course must meet certain standards and be taught through a state-approved agency such as a driving school. Completion of a point reduction class could not only save you money and keep you on the road, but it refreshes your knowledge of vehicle and traffic laws, teaches you defensive driving skills, and generally can make you a better, safer driver.
