Medicare provides effective coverage for many Americans, with about 15% of the population enrolled. And while it can pay for many of your basic health and medical services, some enrollees will need supplemental insurance or additional funding to meet their needs. Here are examples of expenses that Medicare plans do not cover.

What Health Services Are Not Covered By Medicare?

Dental Care

While seniors need to visit their dentist for routine cleanings and oral procedures, Medicare plans generally do not pay for these appointments, including tooth extractions, dentures, dental devices, and fillings. Medicare Part A, on the other hand, will cover dental procedures performed in a hospital.

Cosmetic Surgery

Medicare does not extend to elective cosmetic surgery. However, if a patient has a mastectomy due to breast cancer, their Medicare plan can cover the breast reconstruction.

Hearing Aids

Medicare plansIf you see a doctor for a hearing exam or a hearing aid fitting, Medicare will not cover it. Your plan will also not include the hearing aids themselves. However, if a doctor refers you to a specialist for testing as part of medical diagnostics, Medicare may pay for the appointment. This is because the test will determine if you need further medical treatment.

Long-Term Care

When thinking about your future care, note that Medicare plans do not extend to long-term nursing care or assisted living. However, Medicare does cover skilled nursing care for the first 20 days after a three-day hospital stay, home health care with a doctor’s recommendation, and hospice care.
