Each year, hundreds of thousands of people experience strokes, which occur when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. The leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., strokes can have lifelong implications. However, with the right tools and support, most patients can regain much of their strength and capabilities. If your loved one has recently experienced one of these life-altering episodes, here’s what you need to know about stroke recovery.

A Brief Guide to Stroke Recovery

The First Few Days

Typically, stroke rehabilitation begins in the hospital. This treatment, called acute care, involves stabilization and assessment of the condition. Your loved one’s medical team will also develop a treatment plan, which may include inpatient, outpatient, and short-and-long-term care. If they are medically stable, they will likely begin rehab within about two days of the stroke.

Upon Release

Once the patient is released from the hospital, they may spend some time in a rehabilitation center or nursing home before going home. In severe cases, they may need to consider moving to an assisted living facility. In-home assistance is typically necessary—at least for the short-term—as they regain their health and faculties. You, your loved one, and their medical team can determine the best option based on your individual situation.

Continuing Therapy

Whether they go directly home from the hospital or spend time in a rehabilitation center, the patient will need to partake in some long-term therapies. Depending on the severity of the stroke and its effects, they may need several types of therapy. This includes speech therapy to assist with language and occupational therapy to help them perform routine tasks. They may also need physical therapy to regain function of certain body parts.
