THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR VOTE

The first thing a person with Parkinson’s will do on November 6th, Election Day,  is the same thing they do most every morning.   They begin by summoning the strength to get out of bed and shuffle to the medicine cabinet to get their prescribed medication.  The rest of the day will be a mystery, as Parkinson’s disease will lead us on a journey driven by diet, lack of sleep, fatigue, irregularity, anxieties, and depression.

But its “Election Day,” and you want to vote.  But who shall I vote for?  No one reading this column is seeking another philosophical dissertation on the challenges we face as a country.  Each of us attempts to sort out “Real from Fake”... Not based on Party, Race, or affiliation but based on our principles.

CAP is a Non-Profit and has no affiliations to any one Party.   But we are not shy to ask that you “support those, who support us.”  There are great concerns that some individuals seeking office are taking positions that will reduce Health Care provisions that we currently have secured.

How does one determine who “Supports us or is Against us”?

First, go to the Advocacy page of the Michael J Fox Foundation and familiarize yourself with the public policy positions defined as important to the Cause:  https://www.michaeljfox.org/get-involved/advocacy-page.html

Next, look at any number of flyers you may have received in the mail from the candidates running for office, or go to their web pages, and see how close their positions are to our Health Care positions.  Tip ~ Look for the phrase “Pre-existing condition.”  Candidates siting this issue generally have positions that protect health care benefits for individuals that have Disabilities and are sensitive to rising insurance premiums and prescription costs.   If the candidate is an incumbent, examine their past voting record.  (To those in CT, Most Incumbents running for Congressional re-election have a credible record of support).   TIP ~ Many Polling Centers/Town Halls can send an Absentee ballot to your home.  This can provide one security that your voice can be heard, in case PD impacts your day and restricts travel.

The importance of this election can’t be emphasized enough.   Many PWP’s have said to me, “Steve, I wish I could do something more to help the cause?”

You Can: GET OUT AND VOTE!   Thank you.
