Hardwood flooring is beautiful and durable, creating an elegant aesthetic in any room. When you have children, however, protecting your floors from the wear and tear of tiny feet and hands may prove difficult. Here are a few tips to help parents protect their property.

Parents’ Guide to Hardwood Flooring Protection

1. Decorate With Rugs

Rugs in each room will not only add to your décor but also provide a protective barrier between active children and your floorboards. Add runners as well to create a safe pathway, especially in high-traffic areas. Place rug pads underneath to keep rugs securely in their spot.

2. Add Mats

hardwood flooringMats near doorways, especially at entrances from the outside, will reduce the amount of dust, dirt, and grime on your hardwood flooring. Teach children to wipe their feet on the mat as they enter, and designate a spot for them to leave their shoes. Make sure adults also abide by the rules so kids pick up on the good habits. As for play shoes that are part of dress-up sets, make sure children play with these toys in rooms that don’t have hardwood to avoid scratching.

3. Clean Up

Sweep regularly to remove any particles that make their way into rooms with hardwood flooring. Sweeping also eliminates dust bunnies, hair, and pet dander to keep floors bright and beautiful. If something spills, clean it up quickly to stop liquids from getting in and under the wood. Blot with a clean, dry white paper towel or a soft microfiber cloth. If you must use cleaner for sticky messes, choose products designed for wood.

4. Recoat

Have a professional recoat your  polyurethaned floors, as needed,  so your they have an extra layer shielding them from spills and dirt. Because these products are clear, the strength of your flooring is improved without compromising aesthetics.
