Steel is one of the toughest materials available for building construction, known for its durability and strength. It’s also more cost-efficient than materials like concrete, making it a popular choice for savvy engineers and architects. That said, not all steel is created equal; you wouldn’t necessarily use the same type to erect an enormous structure as you would to build a car. These are the best models suited to building construction.

3 Types of Popular Building Construction Steel

1. Carbon

steelCarbon or “mild” steel is very flexible and does not crack when bent. Thanks to its plasticity, it’s excellent at withstanding natural disasters, like earthquakes, without cracking. This can save lives and millions in repair costs. The ratio of carbon can vary. As the percentage of carbon content rises, the steel can become harder and stronger through heat treating. However, at the same time it becomes less ductile and loses weldability; the melting point lowers, which can be problematic in case of a fire.

2. Rebar

Also referred to as reinforced steel, rebar is primarily used to complement concrete or masonry. Since these materials are strong but have weak tensile capabilities, rebar serves as a tension device, enhancing strength and support. Coming in the form of a bar, rebar is versatile and available in different grades, yield strengths, tensions, and elongations.

3. Structural

This type of steel consists of a precise cross section, which can come in all kinds of shapes. Its ability to morph into different forms allows it to be incorporated into all kinds of building plans. Strong and ductile, structural steel can also vary in terms of properties like chemical composition.
