Just like a human, your pet is vulnerable to a number of different health conditions. Parasites are a major concern, with many common varieties affecting cats and dogs across the U.S. and around the world. Here are a few to watch for but which can usually be treated with a trip to a local animal hospital.

Pet Parasites Your Pet May Encounter

1. Fleas & Ticks

Animal HospitalThese are small blood-sucking bugs which may attach themselves to your pet. Ticks are usually a one-time problem, while fleas can establish a lasting infestation on your pet and in your home. Anti-flea and -tick medications can be purchased over the counter, but if the problem persists, visit your local animal hospital for further treatment.

2. Worms

Worms are internal parasites which come in a few varieties including intestinal worms and heartworms. Regular visits to your local animal hospital allow your vet to test for these issues, and you can also use preventive medications to protect your dog.

3. Giardia

Giardia is a microscopic parasite which infects the digestive tract. It may cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog or cat as well as weight loss and lethargy. The infection is also contagious through the animal’s waste. Treatment involves a course of medication which may last several days.

4. Mange

Mange is a skin condition caused by various types of mites which may bother your dog or cat. It causes significant skin irritation and fur loss and may need to be treated for several weeks or months to ensure the mites are completely eradicated.

5. Ear Mites

Ear mites on their own are a fairly minor infection, but in dogs which are sensitive to them, they can cause severe itching. This in turn leads your pet to scratch heavily and results in injuries. Ear mites are highly contagious, so you will likely need to treat all of your pets at once.
