Many pool owners rely on cartridge filter systems to keep the water clean and healthy all year long. In many cases, cartridge filters can be kept clean with occasional rinsing. However, there are times when these devices become damaged and require complete replacement. If you’re concerned about your pool pump filter, here are five common signs it needs to be replaced.

5 Signs Your Pool Filter Cartridge Needs to Be Replaced

1. Holes in Cartridge

Over time, the pressure of water running through the pump system can put a strain on the paper or polyester pleats that filter out contaminants. Gradually, this pressure causes the pleats to deteriorate, creating holes. When this happens, contaminants can easily bypass the pool pump filter, making complete replacement the best solution.

2. Increased Pressure

Often, spraying the pool pump filter can clear things up. However, if cleaning doesn’t resolve your pressure problems, it’s best to replace the cartridge instead.

3. Stained Pleats

Cartridge pleats will naturally lose their original brightness over time, but most discoloration can be resolved with a quick rinse. In situations where routine cleaning doesn’t remove discoloration, it’s possible that whatever contaminant caused the stain may still be leeching into your pool water. To avoid potential problems, swap out the old cartridge for a new one.

4. Damaged Caps

The pleats of a filter’s cartridge are protected and held in place by two durable caps, usually constructed from plastic. Although this material is strong, it can sometimes weaken due to chemical exposure or excessive use. In these cases, the cap may crack, splitting the cartridge open and allowing hazardous materials to pass through your pump system. To restore the integrity of the system, replace the entire unit.

5. Age

Pool pump filter cartridges typically don’t carry an expiration date, so it’s not always easy to tell when yours has reached old age — especially if you don’t notice any of the above warning signs. In general, however, it’s best to replace your filter once every two years — or sooner if your pump is subjected to heavy use.
