Your driveway sees a lot of use. It’s the perfect place for kids to ride their bikes and the main parking area for guests; it can also make the exterior of your home look pristine. However, all that use can lead to severe wear and tear. Repaving the driveway will quickly restore it to like-new condition; but, before you schedule an appointment with your paving contractor, you must prepare the space. Here are a few must-do tasks to get your driveway ready for a new coat of pavement.

Guide to Prepping Your Driveway for a Paving Service

1. Clear the Driveway

PavingTo successfully redo the asphalt and pavement on your driveway, the paving crew needs to have access to the entire surface. When you schedule an appointment, the crew will let you know when the cars need to be removed by and give you an estimate of how long they’ll need to be parked elsewhere. Make sure all vehicles, bikes, sports gear, and equipment is removed before the appointment.

2. Prepare for Removal & Inspection

The old pavement needs to be removed fully before new pavement can be poured. Once the old asphalt has been broken up and removed, the crew will then inspect the soil, grade, and pitch of the driveway to determine what, if any, additional work needs to be done before installing the pavement.

3. Be Prepared to Redo the Edging

Installing a new driveway can lead to some disturbance of the lawn and landscaping immediately surrounding the drive. Though the crew will do their best to keep the disturbance to a minimum, you’ll want to be ready to touch up the landscaping after the installation. Remove any stake lights, potted plants, or decorative edging before the appointment and reinstall them after the driveway is finished.

4. Stay Off the Pavement

After paving the driveway, your asphalt contractor will ask you to stay off the surface for 24 hours. This gives the material a chance to set and cure properly. Driving on the surface prematurely can damage the new asphalt and force you to deal with repairs in the future. After 24 hours have passed, you can use the driveway as normal.
