BOTOX® and dermal fillers are among the most popular and effective  cosmetic procedures performed in America; millions of treatments are done each year. Though both can create a more youthful appearance and smoother skin, they are different. This guide will help you determine which procedure is best for you.

BOTOX or Dermal Filler?

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX has been used safely for decades to reduce the look of facial lines and wrinkles. It is made from a purified form of the botulinum toxin, which is safe in cosmetic doses. BOTOX is injected into the treatment area so that affected muscles are temporarily frozen, giving the face a smoother, younger appearance. Treatments typically last three to four months before reapplication is necessary.

How Can BOTOX Improve Appearance?

BOTOX works on the lines of the face that are caused by the movement of muscles. Frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles are all common treatment areas. Areas such as the neck or jowls cannot be cosmetically enhanced with BOTOX.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

botoxDermal fillers are used to reduce the look of wrinkles and promote a more youthful appearance. Rather than affecting muscles, they are used to fill specific areas. Dermal fillers include:

  • Calcium hydroxylapatite: a compound found in bones
  • Hyaluronic acid: a naturally occurring substance in the skin
  • Polyalkylimide: a water-based gel that interacts well with the body’s natural tissues
  • Polylactic acid: stimulates the skin to make collagen
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres — PMMA: mixed with water and injected into the fat layer, PMMA is a semi-permanent filler

What Areas Respond Well to Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers work on lines and wrinkles as well as areas that are not affected by muscle movement. They can soften and improve the appearance of scars, plump thin lips, and add volume to areas where there is loss of elasticity and collagen. Treatments are effective for two to six months or longer, depending on the type of filler used.

Which Cosmetic Procedure Should You Choose?

BOTOX and dermal fillers can be used alone or in combination with each other. For example, you might choose BOTOX to reduce forehead lines and a filler to improve the lip area. Both are minimally invasive and outpatient procedures, although both may have side effects. The first step in choosing a cosmetic treatment is to have a consultation with a certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon to determine your needs and realistic outcomes from the choices available.
