Moving can be stressful for all members of a family, and pets are no exception, especially because they don't understand the reasons for the change. Sometimes, this can result in behavioral issues, such as a regression in house training. With this in mind, if you’re planning an upcoming move, here are a few animal care strategies you can implement to ease the transition.

Animal Care Techniques for Moving

1. Maintain Their Normal Schedule

Being in an unfamiliar environment can be overwhelming for pets. Therefore, strive to minimize any other changes as much as possible. Stick to their normal routine for feeding, walks, and play time up to and after the move.

2. Take Them for an Initial Visit

Ideally, the official move-in day won’t be the first time your pet has explored your new home. If possible, bring them over for a visit beforehand to familiarize them with the area.

3. Prepare for a Hassle-Free Drive

Some pets travel well, but others become anxious in vehicles. Be sure your pet has safe and comfortable travel arrangements, such as a car hammock or safety harness. Bring toys and blankets to keep them at ease. Don’t forget to double-check that they are wearing tags with the appropriate contact information, too.

4. Set Up a Personal Space

5. Keep a Watchful Eye

During the first few weeks in your new home, be especially mindful of possible escapes. Pets are inclined to get loose in an attempt to find their way back to their old homes. If possible, avoid leaving them alone for extended periods of time during the first few days after the move so they know the new living arrangements are permanent for the whole family.
