Whether you’re new to the gym or returning after a break, you likely have at least a few goals in mind. Maybe you’d like to lose weight, or you’ve decided to build muscle and take your physique to the next level. Whatever your objective is, if you don’t set attainable goals, you’ll become frustrated. Below are a few tips to help you create a realistic exercise objective at the gym to encourage your healthy lifestyle.

3 Tips for Setting Goals at the Gym

1. Be Specific

Instead of just saying, “I want to lose weight,” get specific about your objective. For instance, are you looking to build more muscle in your arms? Drop 5 pounds of belly fat? By getting down into the details, you’ll keep yourself focused during your workouts and make better choices about your exercises so you achieve the goal.

2. Make a Timeline

gymFigure out a few short-, mid-, and long-term goals for yourself and set realistic timelines for each one. For example, if you want to lose 5 pounds of belly fat, set a specific week that you want your weigh-in to reflect that goal. This will help prevent you from being derailed from your objective when other areas of your life get busy and offer a metric for you to measure your progress. Not only are you more likely to see results, but you can also change the time frame if you feel like it’s not possible.

3. Be Positive

You are more likely to achieve positive objectives than negative ones. For example, instead of saying, “I want to lose 10 pounds of fat because I hate how my body looks in a bathing suit,” rephrase it as, “I want to eliminate 10 pounds of fat because I love myself and want to be healthy.” While it’s hard to remain positive at times, make sure you take a few minutes to applaud yourself for making a healthy lifestyle change.
